Why use a Dedicated Virtual Server System vs. a Shared System
Using an image or slice from a shared virtual system is good for development work or non-critical online applications and web sites. You get the full use and access to a dedicated operating system (an image) to do anything you need, just like a single dedicated server at a low cost, but if you are running a production site you should consider the following:
- Risk in sharing the core system: When using a virtual image on a shared virtual system, the image is dedicated to one customer, but the physical hardware and the core virtualization software is all share. So, anything that happens to the core system will affect you.
- Security Risk: You have no control over the security enforcement of the other images, so you have no idea what they are allowing in that could infect the system and your image.
- Bad Code: The other image users could have bad code or application configuration that could crash their system or the core system ultimately affecting you.
- Bad practices or expertise: In some cases, although rare, if the other image users do something foolish it can cause the system to require a reboot, or even take the system down.
- Resource flood: If an image user on the shared virtual system suddenly allows disc space, bandwidth or other resources to fill to capacity the system could easily lock up. The providers of a shared virtual system should be monitoring these things, but this can happen so fast that the damage can be done in seconds, especially if the image users are not responsible.
